Facing the persistent challenges of bunker erosion and maintenance on their sandy soil, Kings Lynn Golf Club turned to EcoBunker for a long-term, sustainable solution. Now in the third phase of a comprehensive 40-bunker renovation, the club is already experiencing substantial benefits in both aesthetics and efficiency. The reduced maintenance requirements and enhanced durability of EcoBunker installations are improving course conditions while saving valuable time and resources.

Course: Kings Lynn Golf Club.

Course Type: An inland woodland / parkland course with a mix of high-walled and low-edged bunkers.

Project Overview: The renovation began with an initial EcoBunker installation guided by EcoBunker experts. After learning the specialised construction techniques, the Kings Lynn team took over and has continued implementing the system. Now in phase three, all Par 3 bunkers are complete, with further renovations strategically planned. The club anticipates a 10-year timeline, with the confidence that their earliest EcoBunker installations will still be in prime condition when the final bunkers are rebuilt.

“We have a real problem with soil erosion and rabbit burrowing, which quickly contaminates the bunker sand. To counter this, we have fitted EcoTec bunker liners alongside the synthetic walls to create a fully closed system. This requires virtually no maintenance and eliminates all contamination. Previously, we could spend half a day picking out stones, weeding walls, and topping up sand on a single bunker, but now we simply brush the faces, knock the sand off, and strim the top edge. We’re saving time and budget with every bunker we replace.”

Michael Fahy, Deputy Head Greenkeeper, Kings Lynn G.C.

Key Achievements

  • Reinforced bunker walls prevent erosion and collapse, improving structural integrity.
  • EcoBunker’s synthetic turf design delivers a sharp, natural-looking finish that members appreciate.
  • Ultra-low maintenance: Eliminates the need for regular weeding, sand top-up and frequent rebuilding, reducing costs significantly.
  • Integration of EcoTec bunker liners has created a fully closed system, preventing sand contamination from soil erosion and wildlife activity.
  • Maintenance time per bunker has been drastically reduced: previously requiring half a day for cleaning and repairs, now only light brushing and minor edge trimming are needed.
